We recognize the potential of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) to help offset electricity costs for our customers and build a resilient, future-proof local power grid. Whether you are looking to connect solar, CHP, storage, or another type of DER, our Generation Connections team is here to help you along the way.

To help you get started, we’ve outlined our connection processes for both Micro and Small, Mid-Sized or Large Embedded Generation Facilities.

Micro-Embedded Generation Facility (≤ 10kW)

Notice:

If you have all the info as specified under Step 3, you can begin the process at Step 3. Submission of Preliminary Consultation Information Request form is not necessary for completion of required capacity check.

Submit a Preliminary Consultation Information Request (PCIR) form to GenerationConnections@oshawapower.ca
Oshawa Power will perform a preliminary generation capacity check and indicate if the project can proceed to the next steps.

Upon confirmation from Oshawa Power that capacity may be available, submission of the following information will be required:
- Completed Micro-Embedded Generation Connection Application (Form C);
- Single line diagram as per requirements specified on Page 3 of Form C;
- Manufacturer specifications of generation source, inverter, etc.; and
- Any other relevant information as requested by Oshawa Power to process your request.
Oshawa Power will assess the complete application bundle and issue an Offer to Connect which outlines associated costs for connection to Oshawa Power’s distribution system, if the project is deemed acceptable to proceed.
Oshawa Power will also provide a Micro-Embedded Generation Facility Connection Agreement (see sample) which is to be signed and returned along with payment as specified in the Offer to Connect, as well as a signed copy of the Offer to Connect.
- Note: Applicants are cautioned not to preform any work that incur significant costs until this step in the process is reached.
The applicant can now proceed with construction of their generation facility. Once construction of the Micro-Embedded Generation Facility is completed and meets Oshawa Power’s requirements, the applicant is to obtain a Connection Authorization from the Electrical Safety Authority.
Upon receipt of the Electrical Safety Authority’s Connection Authorization, Oshawa Power will Schedule the connection and install a bi-directional meter.

Notes:

No Connection Impact Assessment (CIA) is needed to connect a Micro-Embedded Generation Facility.
The linked Connection Agreement is only a sample for your reference. The complete document with relevant information will be provided by Oshawa Power upon completion of assessment of the project.

Small, Mid-Sized, or Large Embedded Generation Facility (> 10kW)

Upon confirmation from Oshawa Power that capacity may be available, submission of the following information will be required:
- Completed Connection Impact Assessment Application (Click here for instruction on how to complete your Connection Impact Assessment Application);
- Completed Connection Impact Assessment Study Agreement (To be provided by Oshawa Power upon successful capacity check);
- Payment for Oshawa Power to perform a Connection Impact Assessment as per the Connection Impact Assessment Fee Schedule;
  - Note: Additional Connection Impact Assessment fees [See Hydro One Fee Schedule for more details.] may apply if upstream transmitter Connection Impact Assessment is needed. This cost will be collected by Oshawa Power on behalf of the transmitter.
- Single Line Diagram as per Appendix B of Distribution System Code’s DER Connection Procedures;
- Protection Philosophy (Sample can be found in Appendix A of Distribution System Code’s DER Connection Procedures);
- Manufacturer specifications of generation source, inverter, etc.; and
- Any other relevant information as per Section O of Connection Impact Assessment Application or as requested by Oshawa Power.
Oshawa Power will assess the complete application bundle, produce all applicable Connection Impact Assessment study reports, and outline associated costs for connection to Oshawa Power’s distribution system, if the project is deemed acceptable to proceed.
Oshawa Power will also provide a Cost Connection Agreement that highlights respective scopes of work for the generator, as well as for Oshawa Power, to make the generation connection.
Upon receipt of the signed Cost Connection Agreement and payment, Oshawa Power will schedule the work required to make the connection.
- Note: Applicants are cautioned not to perform any work that may incur significant costs until this step in the process is reached.
The applicant can simultaneously proceed with construction of their generation facility.
Once the Embedded-Generation Facility is constructed to Oshawa Power’s requirements, the applicant is to obtain a Connection Authorization from the Electrical Safety Authority. Final detailed design documents are also to be submitted to Oshawa Power along with ESA’s Connection Authorization.
- Note: Where applicable, all final design documents including but not limited to As builts, commissioning verification documents, etc. are to be stamped/approved by a Professional Engineer (P. Eng) and submitted to Oshawa Power.
Oshawa Power will also provide a Connection Agreement for a Small, Mid-Sized, or Large Embedded generation facility which is to be signed by both parties.
Oshawa Power will schedule the final connection upon receipt of signed Connection Agreement and all other relevant approval and/or documentation.

Notes:

A Connection Impact Assessment is needed to connect a Small, Mid-Sized, or Large Embedded Generation Facility.
- Connection Impact Assessment Fees apply.
- Additional upstream transmitter Connection Impact Assessment may be required. Additional fees may apply. [See Hydro One Fee Schedule for more details.]
Additional information and/or steps, including but not limited to; additional costs and/or agreements with Hydro One, additional testing and commissioning procedures and documentation, etc. may be involved depending on the scope and/or scale of the project. Oshawa Power will request information as needed.

Restricted Feeders

Certain feeders supplying Oshawa Power’s service territory may be restricted due to short circuit capacity limitations. Please reference our comprehensive list of restricted feeders, updated every three months or as required.
